Kansas and back in 48

Last Friday morning I was getting ready for my first airplane trip in almost 3 years. This was not something we had planned for many months like the majority of our trips, and it was the first trip we had made in the year since moving here. I don't think I have ever stayed somewhere for so long before. We had bought our tickets for our trip only 2 days previously. It was an emergent trip.

It had been a week since we got the phone call that a family member was dying. No pressure, but if we wanted to see her on this side of heaven again, we needed to go see her, NOW. So, we went.

The big kids stayed with granny and papa, which was a grand adventure for them, and in fact, they didn't want to come home! Lily came with us and got to go on an airplane for the first time. She was a great traveler and only got fed up with the car ride when she was strapped into her seat.

We flew out of Tri-cities, to Atlanta, Georgia. Had lunch at the airport Chili's and caught our plane to Wichita. In Wichita we rented our car and drove the 65 miles south to Anthony, Kansas. A small two street town with 2 stop lights. I have been to smaller, believe it or not. I like Anthony with it's downtown and local restaurants, complimented by McDonald's and Pizza Hut. It's two small grocery stores where we miraculously found gluten free mixes, and it's local geography of "turn by the cotton gin and follow the dirt road around to our house."

Great Grandma Ellie was thrilled to see us and meet the newest member of the family, Liliana. Her fifth great-grandkid, and fourth great-granddaughter. Davy is the only boy! We hugged Grandma Lori as well, and were saddened to see how she has changed. The Lori of 6 years ago was in constant motion. Cooking, cleaning, mowing the yard, playing with the kids outside. Lori of 2 years ago, even after chemo, had many home cooked meals ready for us when we arrived, including a dessert for every meal. This Lori is dying. She spent her time talking to us. Though talking makes her tired and weak. She fussed that she couldn't cook for us. "That is okay," I said, "it's my turn."

I cooked and washed dishes for the three meals we were there, and loved doing it. Even without a dishwasher! I left leftovers in the refrigerator, and even made gluten free brownies for dessert. I was heartened to see Lori eat a little bit of brownie and ask for seconds. Something that actually peaked her appetite a bit.

We visited with their friends who stopped by. Their friends are always coming and going, which tells me that they are loved and not alone. I finally got to talk to Lori alone, and we discussed her situation and why hospice wasn't there yet. Because she is still holding out hope for one more chance of treatment. If that doesn't happen, hospice will come. She was open, blunt, honest about her situation. After all, she has had three years of living with cancer, this is not a surprise. Though she would love more life here, she is prepared for the life to come, and that is a comfort for all. I told her Davy was concerned about her and was calling her Grandma Lori. That is fitting. Sometimes family is adopted instead of born, and she definitely has been part of this family for over 30 years.

I realize, again, when talking to Lori, that we are kindred spirits. I can only say that of a few people in my life. We have never had the chance to be close, but given that chance, we would be. We understand the same language, we think the same way. She asks if I enjoy cooking, I say I do, she smiles, not just with her lips, but with her eyes. And I know without words, that she enjoys cooking as well. She enjoys making things beautiful and comfortable. That is what she has done for decades. She took care of her mother, Grandma Ellie's mother and Grandma Ellie. She has been the caregiver, and now she needs the care. But yet she continues. Even though she was tired and weak, she put away the dishes after I washed them. If I left the room, she was stirring around, doing her best to do this and that. To do what comes naturally to her, making a home.

She thanked us for coming. For coming when we did. She does not know how much longer she has or how much longer she will be able to talk. She was happy to hold Lily and see her be the sweet baby that she is. We talked of Lori's love for Kansas and how God truly brought them to the right place at the right time in their lives. Sometimes it seemed like a mistake, but God had a plan. A plan for treatment for her, a plan for friends who take care of them, and a plan to let her enjoy living in the open country that she loves so much. He is a good God who loves His children.

That afternoon I cried a little, thankful that we had come, after I had wavered at the idea. I stood on their patio, looking over the winter fields with cows, deer and some fog. The wind smelled of rain. Rain on good ground, a fragrance that cannot be sold for any price. It is precious. That smell of growing, of renewal. I have missed that since I moved away from our farm.

We said our goodbye's that night. Possibly the last goodbye on earth, and we knew that. But we will see each other again, whether on "this side of heaven or the other." We love you Lori and pray for you daily. For God to give you strength, relief from pain and peace like no other.

Daybook: February 21, 2011

FOR TODAY
Outside my window...the curtains are drawn, and it is a very dark night, with clouds scudding overhead. The wind is whipping around the house, but not whistling in through the tight windows. I am glad to be inside.

I am thinking...that I can't believe a glass falling off of the counter in the bathroom managed to not only smash itself, but break the toilet to a point of irreparable damage. I have never had this bad of toilet trouble. Ever. It is stupid and it sucks.

I am thankful for...a 48 hour long trip over the weekend. No, it was not a fun beach or mountain getaway. And yet it was the first time that Joey and I have purposely left the older kids with grandparents and gotten away. We still had Lily, but seeing as she can't talk yet, did minimal interrupting. The trip was rushed on both ends, but peaceful in the middle. Full of love, lingering and bittersweet farewells.

From the learning rooms (or brain)...Lily is getting better at going from sitting to her belly and doing push-ups, getting those legs ready for crawling. She finally got her second tooth a few days ago. It only took five weeks after the first one!

Gabbie is working on getting her homework done and memorizing her Bible verse. Last week with illness and mommy and daddy leaving, she got a failing grade on her verse. But, life goes on.

Davy is doing great in school, the rest of his class is learning to write their names. He has been doing this most of the year, and can copy out his classmates names rather easily. I am glad we let him stay home an extra year, it is already paying off.

From the kitchen...I need to get back in the swing of cooking after an off kelter week. We had sweet and sour chicken with pineapple, peppers and onions tonight. Over rice, of course. It is one of my favorite meals and so simple.

I am wearing...fuschia knit night gown, I wasn't as ready for bed as Joey, and Lily is peaceful, so why not write something?

I am creating...a business, I hope. Planning on becoming a Jordan Essentials consultant in the next week, and I hope to create a good home business that can help us financially, and provide an outlet for me as well.

I am going...to bed, sooner rather than later. Tomorrow I may go to the dollar store if kids are not too sick.

I am reading...mainly Jordan Essentials catalogs, getting familiar with the products and ingredients.

I am hoping...that my children get well and STAY well this time.

I am hearing...the hum of the computer, the typing of the keys, the roar of the wind, and the whistling of Joey breathing.

Around the house...have to replace the toilet.

One of my favorite things...having my husband clean up after dinner without me asking him to. It makes me feel incredibly loved.

A few plans for the rest of the week...pick up and deliver girl scout cookies, go to small group, clean mom's house, and who knows what else.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...will have to share a picture of us in KS, later.

Daybook February 6, 2011

FOR TODAY
Outside my window...it is a grey and cloudy day. Cold. Last Sunday it was gloriously warm and Sunday. Today is the polar opposite.

I am thinking...how unusual it is for me to be alone. I am home from church (again) with a sick baby. And yet, I am thankful to be alone(ish) and have this time to do things like blogging that I have not had in many moons.

I am thankful for...a house that withstands all sorts of weather. The wind howled around our house yesterday. But it did not shake it or knock it down or even creep through the window panes. Our house is solid if nothing else.

From the learning rooms (or brain)...Lily is learning that is fun to call for "mama" and she is learning how to pick up and eat some solid food. Last night she experimented with green beans. Most of them ended up on the floor, but some made it in her mouth as evidenced by her diaper this morning. Ewww.

Gabbie and Davy are being taught the value of work and money. Last week they were paid to clean out the car and then they were allowed to go to McDonald's with their money and purchase a treat. They even paid out of the backseat window in the drive thru! Yesterday we worked on cleaning rooms and putting away our clean clothes. Gabbie is improving on folding and hanging up clothes.

From the kitchen...The menu plans are done for the month, yay! It really helps me stay in budget and on task to have a month of menus planned. Yet I detest doing it! I am experimenting with baked sesame chicken on Monday, I hope it turns out decently.

I am wearing...navy blue shirt and black sweat-like pants.

I am creating...in my mind I am working on how to design a baby wrap-around body sweater to use in place of giant fluffy snowsuit. Now that Lily is in her bigger carseat she needs a full-body hoodie to keep warm from house to car and back, but that is safe under seat belt straps.

I am going...to a Super Bowl party, if Lily is well enough. We are going to talk to people and eat snacks. Not to watch the game. The kids in fact were upset that we were going as they had voted we have a "MovieBowl" at home instead.

I am reading...magazines, blogs, whatever I can get my hands on. I need a new book!

I am hoping...that Lily's cold is very short-lived.

I am hearing...Lily making her attention getting noises and some "Mum-mum"s mixed in. I need to finish writing this!

Around the house...Thinking about buying some rolly bins for under Gabbie's bed. She is a large compartment girl. Not an individual bin for everything girl. Davy on the other hand has requested more small bins so he can categorize his toys.

One of my favorite things...snuggling with Lily in the middle of the night and having her reach out and hold onto my night gown so she will know if I try to leave!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Reschedule Lily's shots, bake cookies with Joanne, go bowling with Girl Scouts, go to Small group, go to Financial Peace and do life in between!

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

It has been awhile!

Two years. Two years since I wrote anything on here. Two years in which many, many things happened. Some incredibly sad and hard, and some incredibly delightful and joyful.

Now, I am sure you are thinking that this could be said of any two years. That may be true to some extent. But I am serious when I say it. They were two hard years, and yet they also brought us a gift. A gift named Lily. Our newest bundle of joy that lights up our hearts everyday.

We also have a new home in a new zipcode to go with the new bundle of joy. I am loving living with even more trees and bigger hills. I love driving fast on skinny country roads that dip and twist and turn with unexpected thrill. I love our little old house that we call new. Yes it is a little drafty in the winter, and the antique door knobs sometimes lock you in your room, but it is worth every minute of it! I am loving our neighbors who you talk to when taking out the trash and who bring you Christmas candy in metal tins.

I am inviting you to join with me on this journey. The crazy journey of raising three little ones in a small house with shared bedrooms. The journey of using coupons and cash and shopping at thrift stores. The journey of finding ways to make extra money by cleaning houses, ironing or even tutoring. It is about as exciting and scary as that country road that I love to drive, so come along, there is room!

Christmas Giving

So this year I actually managed to save up money for Christmas. I started either in August or September trying to save about $100 per month for Christmas this year. However, by the first of December I had a lot less than the $400 I had wanted to have, minimal. But with some budgeting magic, and God's blessing, we ended up with about $370 for Christmas after all. In the past we have either used credit cards (about 3 years ago) or relied on last minute blessings from family that helped us through the season. This year we are on our own, and though it feels a little overwhelming at times, it also feels freeing. Sure, we aren't giving elaborate gifts, but we can afford what we are giving, and will not be paying on them for the next two years! We will not start January off depressed because of bills. Yay!

After I decided on our budget, or the budget decided on us, I counted how many gifts I wanted to give, or people to give to. Twenty four people. That is a lot of people with $370. So we shortened the list, all married people are counted as one person, sorry people, but that makes it so much easier! If you are a close friend you will get a personal gift on your birthday.

My family drew names for Christmas, so we had four people on that side of the family to buy for. Plus my mom and dad were not included in the name drawing this year, as they never obey the rules, so we also bought gifts for them. On Joey's side of the family his sister had come up with the idea last year that we not worry about the adults, and just focus on the kids. However, I have a hard time doing this. I decided to give the kids a personal gift and all the married people got a "generic" gift that I would make for everyone.

All the married couples will receive a tin of yummy homemade goodness and some coffee. The only couple that is getting left out of this is Hanna and Chris, seeing as Hanna is doing a gluten free and refined sugar free diet, which eliminates all homemade candy! They are getting a surprise gift that I found on clearance which I know she will like.

Before I started shopping I set myself a limit for each person, about $10 (remember a married couple is counted as one person). I also made lists and looked over coupons, and I prayed. Yes, I prayed over our money. I gave thanks that God had blessed us with this much money to spend on gifts and asked Him to help it go even farther than it should so it can be a blessing to others. I truly believe that He has done this for us. I have bought so many wonderful gifts that are both practical and beneficial for people. I currently have six full boxes of gifts ready to be mailed to people, and only a fraction of my money is gone. The rest will pay for shipping, and then start buying gifts for my immediate family (a completely new challenge!).

So what did I buy? Well, a lot of things, where to start?

Jeff: Two copper colored sweat shirts. Originally $7 each, on sale for $5 each, with a $1/2 coupon, made them $9. Saved $5.

Jarrett: Regulation size football. $13. Comparable football at sporting goods store $35. Savings of $22 (Note we went slightly over on his gift, but it is okay, others were under budget)

Jacquelyn: Bath salts, bath fizzes, and sugar scrub, all made with ingredients I had at home, FREE. Containers for each, $3 for all at dollar store. At other store, $2 each, savings of $3. Four tubes Maybelline Lip Gloss on sale with coupons. Normally $24, for me FREE. Socks at Target normally $5, on sale for $4, savings $1. Total cost $7, normal cost $50? guessing since I made all the bath stuff for FREE!!

Connie: Fuzzy socks $3, normally $4, savings $1. Scrapbook stuff $6 at Target. Scrapbook stuff at JoAnns fabric on clearance for $.25 each, bought her about 12 things, which cost $3, plus a tin for $.50 instead of $2.50. Total cost $12.50, normal cost $24.50, savings of $12.

Mom: Salad spinner $10. Embroidered hand towels for kitchen $2 for plain towels and I used my machine at home to embroider them. They look fabulous now! I don't know how much I saved on those! Kleenex holder for purse, normally $2.50, on sale for $.50. Total cost $12.50, normally $20? savings $7.50

Dad: Two stainless steel water bottles. On sale at Walgreens for $3.33, bought 3, one will go another person, used $5 RR, $5 for three, savings of $7. Noramlly $3.99 a piece. Homemade granola, made with ingredients I had on hand, FREE. Container for granola $.50. Normally $1.00. Lastly, a donation made in his name to buy a pair of chickens for a poor family in India, $11. Total cost $15. Savings $7.50

Mom and Dad are also getting a small tin of candy. Tin cost $1, candy, not sure yet!

Marty and Jennie: Candy, coffee, spice tea, embroidered towels, Christmas ornament.

Sam and Christine: Candy, coffee, spice tea.

Grandma Ellie and Lori: Candy, coffee, spice tea.

MeriChris and kids: Candy and coffee. For JoJo, sparkly letters that spell her name in pink. Normally $5, on sale $2, savings $3. Ellie a tin full of fun crafty things to make a scrapbook with. Plus a small scrapbook and greeting cards to paste in. Normal cost $20, my cost $4.50, savings $15.50. MeriChris I made her a pouch style baby sling. I bought 2 yards cotton twill, dyed it at home and then sewed the pouch. Normal cost of fabric $20. My cost $8, only used half for one sling, so $4 for the present. $12 savings, plus $4 of fabric leftover to make another sling for a baby present for someone else. I had a purchased a sling it would have been somewhere between $20 and $30. Total normally $45, my cost $10.50, savings of $34.50! Wow!

For the candy gifts:
Spice tea, FREE, my mom made and packaged it with Gabbie before Thanksgiving.
Metal Christmas tins: Normally $3 each, on sale for $1.50 a piece, 6 x $1.50=$9.00
Ingredients for Candy: Normally $40, on sale plus coupons, $29, savings of $11.
Foil and parchment paper: $3
Coffee, one pound at $8.99.
Total spent $50, savings $20. Plus not sure about how much the spice tea was worth.
This amount of candy made enough for seven gifts, so they are about $7 a piece, well within budget.

Also, as I mentioned Hanna and Chris will be getting something else from us. I found this on clearance at Target on accident one day. It was normally $30, on sale for $7.50. I bought the two they had on clearance. I will either keep one, or find someone else that will appreciate it! Total spent $15, savings $45!

Okay, so for the final total of money spent: $145
What I could have paid for everything: $325
Savings of: $180.
Wow. More than 50% off of everything all together.

Okay, for shipping costs. All boxes free. I'm using free priority mail boxes for the four smaller packages, and recycled boxes for the other two. For shipping, I'm using priority mail from home for the smaller four, which saved me $2 in postage plus a trip to the post office, a total of $37.20.
This was paid for by a refund I just received for $37, so did not come out of the Christmas budget, isn't God awesome!!

I will know later today how much shipping is on the other two. I'm assuming about $30 all together, which will make a total of $175 spent out of the Christmas budget, leaving us with about $195 approximately to spend on our immediate family, or a little less than $50 a piece. Which of course we will probably spend more on the kids than each other.

I just want to say thank you to God for stretching our money and helping us to bless others and give back after receiving so much this year, we are so blessed!

I'm back?

Haven't written in awhile. I have still been trying to be frugal, and sometimes feeling like I'm not doing quite as great as I would like. A lot of it is still trial and failure.

I need to look at my receipts for this month and try and figure out where I spent my money and on what. It feels like I have spent a lot of money, and have very little to show for it, at least food wise.

Next month my goal is to only spend my grocery money on groceries. I know, shocking, right? The thing is at our house, my "grocery" categrory is also used to buy pull-ups, cleaning supplies, and all medical or beauty supplies. So only a part of it really goes to groceries.

I know this month the pull-ups have really put a dent in the budget. Even on sale with coupons and rebates, those things are just plain ridiculous. I've already told Davy no more. He will use the potty!! He physically can and knows how, and can do it without me, he just needs to do it consistently.

I have also done a lot of shopping this month for MOPS. First decorations and now door prizes. I have gotten some great deals, though some of them are with rebates attached, so they won't seem great until I get that money back.

Next week our theme is "identity" and we are dressing up for the meeting. The door prizes are different make up items. I am very happy with what I paid for these, or actually, didn't pay for these!

2 Sonia something Makeup bags from Target, reg. 12.99 Paid 3.24 each Total 6.50
2 Rimmel Eye Shadows, reg 4.79 each, Paid 00, Total 00
2 Jane Lip Glosses, reg 3.99 each, Paid 1.99, Total 3.99 (forgot I had a coupon which would have made them lower, oops)
4 Revlon Nail Clippers, reg 2.99 each, Paid 00, Total 00
2 Bottles Revlon Nail Polish, reg 4.39 each, Paid .20, Total .40
1 Loreal Wet Face Washclothes reg 7.99, Paid 7.99, rebate for 7.99, Total 00

Total worth of items $73. Total paid for items $10.90 Not bad!

These will split up into 7 prizes. Each makeup bag will have one pail nail clippers inside. One eye shadow with one lip gloss, one nail clippers with 1 nail polish, and the washcloths by themselves. I have seven very nice door prizes, each worth approximately $1.50. I set myself a goal for door prizes this year to be about $1-$2 a piece. This week I made my goal, and people are not getting junk. No dollar store knick-knacks! Yay!

I am still working on another weeks door prizes. Here is the rundown so far.

Two swiffer sweeper start up kits. Reg. 11.99, Paid 7.99, Total $16, Received $10 in coupons back for CVS.
Two swiffer duster start up kits. Reg. 7.99, Paid 00 Total 00 Thank you B1G1 coupons!
1 Scrubbing Bubbles Action Scrubber start kit. Reg. 5.49, Paid 5.49, Rebate 5.49, Total 00

I am hoping I can get an automatic shower cleaner this week as well. These are normally $24.99 at Walgreens. I have a ten dollar off coupon, plus there is a $10 rebate deal, and I have $4 on my Walgreens card that is MOPS money. So I would get the Cleaner for $1!

Out of pocket (after coupons and rebates) for all six door prizes I would have spent $7. Meaning each would be about $1.15. For really nice things, again. I don't know how long I can keep this up, but with God's help I will!

Month-End Tallies

I know it isn't the true end of the month, but I spent the last of my money today, so it pretty much is!

I went to Walgreens three more times since I posted, and WalMart once.

Here are the month end totals.

Totals of all receipts after discounts: $456
Total after gift cards: $378
Total after rebates: $334 amount I will never see again.

Total retail worth of items: $821
Total savings this month: $477
Total percentage saved: %60

Wow! I stayed within budget, though it was close, and got a lot more food and other supplies than I'm used to getting.

I don't think I will need toothpaste or shampoo for a long time, and don't need to buy any unless it is free! Woohoo!

I also spent $50 at social suppers, which helped cut down on eating out and even with that, I wasn't over budget on my food. Yay!
